A guideline GLP study was performed to assess the ready biodegradability of the C14/C16 hydrogenated polyalphaolefin "Pentadecane, 7-methylene mixed with 1-tetradecene, dimers and trimers, hydrogenated" using the CO2 evolution test to assess the level of degradation achieved when using an non-adapted domestic sewage sludge innoculum. Using a high shear dispersion method to bring the insoluble material in contact with the innoculum, the substance attained 104% degradation after 28 days and satisfied the 10 day validation criteria to be described as readily biodegradable. Experimental values in excess of 100% were considered due to sampling/analytical variation.

Degradation by hydrolysis at neutral pH would be expected to proceed at a negligible rate. The substance is in any case readily biodegradable under such conditions.
