Results and discussion

Boiling point
Boiling pt.:
> 220 °C
Decomposition:
yes
Decomp. temp.:
215 - 220 °C
Remarks on result:
other: Volatilization of hydrolysis products were visible in the system and some initial signs of decomposition were also present. 220 deg C was the limitation of the test apparatus.

Any other information on results incl. tables

On heating the sample in an open beaker, a small amount of condensation was seen above the sample at 145ºC, and vapours were visible at 170ºC, although the sample did not show any signs of boiling. At 215ºC the sample was noted to be darker in colour, with some visible white solid. The test was terminated at 215ºC. On repeating the test in a closed apparatus, minimal signs of condensation were visible above 190ºC, there were no signs of reflux and no temperature rise was seen at the condenser. The test was terminated at 220ºC due to the limitations of the equipment used. No signs of boiling were noted.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
Isodecyl diphenyl phosphite is known to hydrolyse readily on contact with moisture. The signs of boiling seen in the open beaker apparatus can therefore be attributed to isodecanol which is liberated by the hydrolysis of the phosphite. It can therefore be concluded that isodecyl diphenyl phosphite decomposes or hydrolyses before the boiling point is reached. The sample was not observed to ignite during the test, therefore it can be concluded that
