Remarks:
The authors tested acute fish toxicity on Leuciscus idus melanotus with the Golden Orfe test according to DIN 38412 Part 15. No GLP standards are specified but sufficient data are given concerning the materials and methods and the results. Therefore, the study should be considered as reliable with restrictions, a Klimisch 2d study, a test procedure in accordance with national standards with acceptable restrictions.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Validity criteria fulfilled:
not applicable
Conclusions:
The authors tested acute fish toxicity of benzotrichloride on Leuciscus idus melanotus with the Golden Orfe test according to DIN 38412 Part 15. Under the test conditions, a LC50 after 48h was reported to be 4140 mg/L.
At this level of information, the test substance can not be classified according to the CLP regulation (EC) n° 1272/2008 since the basis of classification is the LC50 value after 96h.
Executive summary:

The authors tested acute fish toxicity of benzotrichloride (CAS n° 98-07-7) on Leuciscus idus melanotus with the Golden Orfe test according to DIN 38412 Part 15. Few details are given concerning the materials and methods.

Under the test conditions, a LC50 after 48h was reported to be 4140 mg/L. At this level of information, the test substance can not be classified according to the CLP regulation (EC) n° 1272/2008 since the basis of this classification is the LC50 value after 96h.

Besides, even if it is not clearly stated whether the incubation solutions were neutralized before incubation, the concentration reached at LC0 would involve such big acidification of the test medium (pH 1 -2 ), it would kill all fishes. Hence, as no mortality was observed at this level, it can be assumed that the test solutions were neutralized before start of incubation as required by the standard. Other details on the requirements of the standard can not be controlled since only main elements of the experiments are reported.

Hence, no GLP standards are specified and sufficient data are given concerning the materials and methods and the results. Therefore, the study should be considered as reliable with restrictions, a test procedure in accordance with national standards with acceptable restrictions.
