Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
explosive properties of explosives
Type of information:
other: read-across from supporting substance (structural analogue or surrogate)
Adequacy of study:
weight of evidence
Study period:
2015-2016
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
comparable to guideline study
Remarks:
The complete read across justification is detailed in section 13. Source study has reliability 1.
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.14 (Explosive properties)
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: UN Transport Regulations test series 1 and 2.
GLP compliance:
yes
Parameter:
other: Explosive under influence of flame
Remarks on result:
negative (not further specified)

For safety reasons the sensitivity to impact and friction is tested in a preliminary test.

Preliminary Test

Impact sensitivity (3 (a)), impact energy 40 J: negative, none of the 6 trials led to any explosion and flames.

Friction sensitivity (3 (b)): negative, none of the 6 trials led to any explosion, crepitation and flames.

Main Test

1. Thermal sensitivity (E. 1)

The limiting diameter, i.e. the largest diameter of the orifice at which "explosion" occurs, is: < 1.0 mm.

Assessment of the result within the meaning of test E. l (related to Division 4.1): the effect of intensively heating the substance under high confinement is low.

Assessment of the result within the meaning of test 1(b): there is no effect from intensively heating the substance under high confinement ("-").

Assessment of the result within the meaning of test 2(b ): there is no violent effect from intensively heating the substance under high confinement ("-").

2. Time/Pressure Test CC. I; Test l(c); Test 2(c))

Assessment of the result within the meaning of test 1(c): the maximum pressure reached in any one test is less than 2070 kPa gauge. The substance does not show the ability to deflagrate ("-").

Assessment of the result within the meaning of test 2(c): the time for a pressure rise from 670 kPa to 2070 kPa is 30 ms or more or a pressure of 2070 kPa gauge is not reached. The substance shows slow or no deflagration ("-").

Interpretation of the results:

The test substance is not considered to exhibit a potential of explosiveness.

The result does not lead to a classification.

Interpretation of results:
other: non explosive according to the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008)
Conclusions:
Non explosive.
Executive summary:

Method

Test substance was assessed for explosive properties, following EU method A.14. In particular, friction sensitivity, impact sensitivity and thermal sensitivity were examined in preliminary and main tests.

Results

In both preliminary and main tests, test substance did not show a potential for explosiveness.

Guideline:
EU Method A.14 (Explosive properties)
Parameter:
other: more sensitive to shock than m-dinitrobenzene
Remarks on result:
negative (not further specified)
Parameter:

Remarks on result:
negative (not further specified)
Parameter:
other: explosive under influence of flame
Remarks on result:

Conclusions:
Not explosive under the influence of a flame.
Less sensitive to shock than dinitrobenzene
Less sensitive to friction than dinitrobenzene.
Executive summary:

Method

The test has been conducted according to the EU Method A.14 (Explosive properties).

No other information on method is available. The information derived from migrated NONS file, as per Article 25(3) request; permission to refer granted by ECHA.

Results

Non explosive.

Description of key information

Non explosive

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

No data on test substance itself was available. A weight of evidence approach was adopted, using Similar Substance 01 and 02 as read across substances. In particular, Similar Substance 01 is an isomer of test substance, differing only for the position of one functional group on an aromatic ring; Similar Substance 02 has structural similarity with test susbtance. A detailed justification of the read across process is attached in section 13.

Information on explosive potential of Similar Substance 01 was derived from a NONS file, as per Article 25(3) request, with permission to refer granted by ECHA.

Both Similar Substance 01 and Similar Substance 02 resulted as non explosive in a test conducted according to EU method A.14, examining sensitivity to heat, friction and shock.

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008), 2.1.2 section, substances, mixtures and articles of this class are classified as an unstable explosive on the basis of the flowchart described in Figure 2.1.2 of the CLP Regulation. The test methods are described in Part I of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria

The explosive properties of Direct Blue 273 were assessed by means of a read across approach. Due to the lack of explosive potential in read across substances, i.e. Similar Substance 01 and Similar Substance 02, under different test conditions, Direct Blue 273 is expected to be non explosive.
