Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

No special studies on sediment toxicity to benthic organisms are available but several observations suggest that slags do not negatively influence the sediment quality and that slags are excellent substrate for growth of benthos.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10, LC10 or NOEC for freshwater sediment:
100 000 mg/kg sediment dw
EC10, LC10 or NOEC for marine water sediment:
100 000 mg/kg sediment dw

Additional information

In a field study it has been shown that benthic organisms growing on slags (BOS) exhibited even greater species diversity and population density than on natural rock. So no negative influence of slags on benthic organisms could be detected. Therefore a NOEC = 100 g/kg was taken as a default value for calculations.
