Key result
Auto-ignition temperature:
ca. 440 °C
Remarks on result:
other: The lowest temperature giving a positive effect was 440 °C. The injected volume was 200 µL, the ignition delay was 10 s. At a temperature of 430 °C no ignition was observed.
Conclusions:
The auto-ignition temperature of the test substance was determined according to guideline DIN 51794. The auto-ignition temperature of the test substance was found to be 440 ± 10 °C.
Executive summary:

The Auto-ignition Temperature of Benzyl Salicylate was determined in a SUR BERLIN oven, equipped with a 250 mL glass ignition vessel according to DIN 51794.

The lowest temperature giving a positive effect was 440 °C. The injected volume was 200 µL, the ignition delay was 10 s. At a temperature of 430 °C no ignition was observed.

Therefore, the auto-ignition temperature of the test substance was 440 ± 10 °C.

Description of key information

Auto flammability 440 ± 10 °C (DIN 51794; EU method A15)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Autoflammability / Self-ignition temperature at 101 325 Pa:
430 °C

Additional information

The auto-ignition temperature of the test substance was determined according to guideline DIN 51794. At a temperature of 430

°C no ignition was observed. The lowest temperature giving a positive effect was 440 °C. Therefore, the auto-ignition temperature of the test substance was found to be 440 ± 10 °C. The +/- 10 °C refers to the reproducibility of the method as specified by the guideline.

According to the guidelines the lowest temperature giving a positive effect should be rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5 °C. However, since more temperatures in the range 430°C to 440°C were not tested a conservative value of 430°C has been chosen for the purposes of the CSA even though no ignition was observed at 430°C.
