Description of key information

Biodegradation: Methyl methacrylate is readily biodegradable in OECD screening test OECD 301 C: 94 % biodegradation within 14 days.

Abiotic degradation by hydrolysis under environmental conditions of methyl methacrylate is low

Bioaccumulation: log Pow of methyl methacrylate is 1.38, therefore bioaccumulation of methyl methacrylate is not expected.

Adsorption to soil and sediment is low due to log log Pow.

Additional information

In water methyl methacrylate will be rapidly biodegraded, abiotic degradation by hydrolyses is not of major concern. From the water surface the test substance will evaporate slowly into the air. After exposure to the air methyl methacrylate will be rapidly degraded by photochemical processes. Based on a log Pow of 1.38, bioaccumulation of methyl methacrylate is not expected. Due to the low logKoc for different soil types adsorption to the solid soil phase of methy methacrylate is unlikely. Furthermore, based on a Mackay Level 1 calculation the substance will mainly partition to air (ca. 91.5 %) in this equilibrium model. In the Mackay Level III model, which additionally takes into account transport and degradation processes. MMA, when released to air or water, will predominantly remain in the environmental compartment into which it was released (air: 94.8 %; water: 98.5 %).
