- Endpoint:
- flammable solids
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- 2004-2006
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- guideline study
- Justification for type of information:
- Study was carried out according to generally valid and internationally accepted testing guidelines and under GLP. Test substance is adequately characterised. Therefore full validation applies.
- Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
- reference to same study
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
- Version / remarks:
- Cited as Directive 92/69/EEC, A.10
- Deviations:
- no
- GLP compliance:
- yes (incl. QA statement)
- Remarks:
- Assessment of conformity with GLP on March 5, 2004; certificate date 17th May 2004
- Key result
- Test procedure:
- burning rate test: preliminary screening test
- Remarks on result:
- substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period
- Interpretation of results:
- not classified based on GHS criteria
- Conclusions:
- Sodium Chlorate ignites, but no propagation of burning is observed under the test conditions.
The test item is NOT considered as Flammable Solid according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP regulation) and UN Globally Harmonised System (GHS) - Executive summary:
The Flammability of test item was determined acccording to EU method A.10 based on the preliminary test only and under GLP.
The test item melts and burns by emitting an intense orange light during the time of contact with the flame (2 minutes). As soon as the flame is withdrawn, combustion stops: no propagation of burning was observed.
The test item is NOT considered as a Flammable Solid according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP regulation) and UN Globally Harmonised System (GHS).
- Endpoint:
- pyrophoric solids
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
- Endpoint:
- substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
- Endpoint:
- self-heating substances / mixtures
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:

Preliminary screening test. The test item melts and burns by emitting an intense orange light during the time of contact with the flame (2 minutes as described in the method); as soon as the flame is withdrawn, combustion stops: no propagation of burning.
The test item is NOT considered as Flammable, and no further testing is required according to the guideline.
Description of key information
The test substance is NOT considered to be Flammable solid according to regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP regulation)
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Flammability:
- not classified
Additional information
A fully reliable experimental study, conducted according to a recognized EC method and under GLP, is available. It is considered as a key study.
The material ignites in the A.10 screening test when in contact with a flame, but combustion stops after removal of the ignition source. No propagation of burning.
The test item is NOT considered as a Flammable Solid according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP regulation) and UN Globally Harmonised System (GHS).
In addition, it is not expected that sodium chlorate has self-heating properties, pyrophoric properties and reacts with water. Instead it is very well soluble in water.
Justification for classification or non-classification
The substance is NOT considered as a Flammable Solid according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP regulation) and UN Globally Harmonised System (GHS).
Based on the chemical structure of the substance and experience in handling and use of the substance, no flammable properties are anticipated if contact with air or water. In addition, no exothermic events were observed during the determination of the relative-self ignition temperature or the stability test by DSC. Therefore studies were deemed unnecessary.
