Description of key information

The key study for this endpoint (Sjölin, 2006) was conducted under GLP conditions and to the OECD guideline 201. The Study reported a 72 hour ErC50 of >100mg/l for growth inhibition of Scenedesmus capricornutum, conducted at concentrations of 1.56, 3.12, 6.25, 12.5, 25.0, 50.0 and 100mg/l.

Additional information

Information provided by the Sponsor indicated that at the pH and concentration used in this study the test item was likely to have become unstable. It is considered likely that the addition of the test item to water resulted in the rapid decomposition of the substance to form zirconium hydroxide, together with accompanying release of carbonate and ammonium ions to the solution.

72h ErC50 for freshwater algae: >100mg/l

The key study was given a reliability score of 2 based upon the criteria of Klimisch et al, 1997, based on the lack of solution analysis and the level of detail contained in the study report. In the absence of solution analysis results are quoted in terms of nominal concentrations.
