Description of key information

Lithium metal may ignite in air above its melting point of 180.5 °C.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Autoflammability / Self-ignition temperature at 101 325 Pa:
180.5 °C

Additional information

Solid lithium is not easy to ignite; even a small piece must be heated for some time before a sustained reaction takes place. Bulk solid lithium at room temperature does not burn spontaneously in air; it can be heated to its melting point in air without inflammation.
