the study does not need to be conducted because based on structure, surface activity is not expected or cannot be predicted

Description of key information

Not surface active

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

On the basis of structural examination, tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol is not expected to be surface active; surface activity is not a desired property of the substance. Therefore, the requirement for testing is waived in accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex VII.

In a secondary source which has been subject to peer review and in which the original sources are traceable, tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol was reported to have a surface tension of 37 mN/m. However, this relates to the pure substance and is considered not relevant for REACH registration because according to REACH Guidance R.7a, the surface tention of the aqueous solution is required.
