In studying the adsorption/desorption
coefficient, DBS eluted as three chromatographically resolved peaks. The
first peak, representing the monobromostyrene minor constituent, had a
mean peak retention time of 5.435 minutes. The second peak, representing
the dibromostyrene major constituent, had a mean peak retention time of
7.067 minutes. The third peak, representing the tribromostyrene minor
constituent, had a mean peak retention time of 9.275 minutes. The
retention times for all three DBS peaks were bracketed by the reference
standards. The corresponding mean log KOC values for DBS were calculated
as 3.27 ± 0.000274, 3.79 ± 0.000551 and 4.26 ± 0.000762, respectively,
for the three constituents. The solubility of DBS in HPLC-grade bottled
reagent water was dependent on the component of the DBS test substance
being monitored. The mean water solubility for DBS at 20 ºC was 6.91 ±
0.0871, 49.2 ± 1.45, and 1.03 ± 0.104 mg/L using the dibromo-,
monobromo-, and tribromostyrene surrogates for the test substance,
respectively, to quantitative DBS concentrations. The available data
indicates that the substance is likely to partition to particulates,
however as the substance is only manufactured or imported to the EU as a
polymer, exposure to the environment of the monomer is unlikely. In view
of this exposure information further transport and distribution testing
on the monomer is considered to be inappropriate.
