Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (sensitising)
Additional information:

Older data from a guinea pig sensitisation test showed that 8 of 10 animals demonstrated some degree of sensitisation, with 5 of 10 showing moderate to strong responses. 2 -Vinylpyridine was included in a validation study of the murine LLNA, and was evaluated as positive (Stimulation Index > 3). These data suggest that 2VP is sensitising.

Migrated from Short description of key information:
As 2VP is a dermal sensitiser, the risk assessment will proceed in a qualitative manner. There is no data on respiratory sensitisation, Risk management measures as recommended will protect workers from sensitising effects of this substance.

Respiratory sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not sensitising)
Additional information:

No data on respiratory sensitisation.

Justification for classification or non-classification

In order to protect workers, 2VP is classified as sensitising, and gloves are recommended to minimize skin contact. This risk management measure also suffices to protect against skin corrosion properties. 2VP is required to be classified as corrosive to the respiratory tract. The risk management measures associated with this risk will accommodate any risk for respiratory sensitisation.
