Description of key information

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, a relative density study (section 7.4) does not need to be conducted as the substance is a gas. An estimation based on calculation shall be made from molecular weight and the Ideal Gas Laws, ρ = m/V. As 1 mol of gas at normal conditions has the volume of 22.4 l and MW = 170.03, ρ = m/V = 170.03/22.4 l = 7.59 g/l = 0.0076 g/cm3. The density of air can then be calculated in the same way: ρ = m/V = 29/22.4 l = 1.29 g/l = 0.0013 g/cm3. The relative density of 1,1,1,2,3,3,3-heptafluoropropane with respect to air is then 0.0076/0.0013 = 5.8.
Nevertheless, data are available which indicate that the substance has a density of 1.41 mg/cm3 at 25 ºC. Based on the value and the temperature, it is presumed that these data refer to the liquefied substance.

Additional information

The value published in a peer-reviewed handbook, mentioned in REACH guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.7.1.1.2, is likely to refer to the liquified substance.
