Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
29 April 2003 - 9 May 2003
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
equivalent or similar to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Version / remarks:
The fire train test was performed in accordance with SOP, LP-06. Method used is based on EU method A.10
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Moisture content: 0.5% w/w
Batch Number: H03421
Test procedure:
burning rate test over 100 mm length
Burning time:
0 s
Moisture (wt %):
0.5
Remarks on result:
other: combustion localised to ignition source

Six fire train tests were performed on the test substance at room temperature (21°C). The fire did not propagate along the train during this test. The substance was observed to support localised combustion.

Test 1: No burning observed

Test 2: No burning observed

Test 3: No burning observed

Test 4: No burning observed

Test 5: No burning observed

Test 6: No burning observed

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
Substance is non-combustible
Executive summary:

Flammability of thioacid was evaluated through a train fire test, based on EU method A.10 (Official Journal of the European Communities L383). A sample of the material was supplied by GlaxoSmithKline for the purposes of this test. The test concluded that the material is classified as a non-combustible solid and will not support propagating combustion. It can support combustion in the vicinity of a very hot ignition source.

Description of key information

Flammability of thioacid was evaluated through a train fire test, based on EU method A.10 (Official Journal of the European Communities L383). The test concluded that the material is classified as a non-combustible solid and will not support propagating combustion.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

A train fire (10 cm) test, based on EU method A.10 under GLP conditions, concluded that it is non-combustible and will not propagate ignition. The test substance supported localised combustion but flame propagation was not observed during the tests, so the criteria for classification as a flammable solid (section 2.7.2 of Annex I of CLP) are not fulfilled.
