Description of key information
For assessment of the short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates, three studies are available. Two have been performed with (1-methylethyl)-1,1'_biphenyl as test substance. In one study, the supporting substance, 4-ethylbiphenyl, was used. Results of all three studies are close together.

For the substance monoisopropylbiphenyl (MIPB, (1-methylethyl)-1,1'-biphenyl) two acute daphnia immobilisation tests were identified. One is a study according to OECD TG 202 under GLP conditions (Muckle/LAUS, 2012). Test material was the substance isopropylbiphenyl (mixture of isomers) from RÜTGERS Novares GmbH which is subject of registration. Test substance concentrations in test medium were measured. Results are based on geometric means of measured concentrations. Reliability of this study is assessed to be 1.
The second study is a pre-guideline pre-GLP study following the principles of OECD TG 202 (Mendoza/DOW, 1981). Test substance was a mixture of two isomers of (mono)isopropylbiphenyl from Functional Products & Systems, TS&D, intended for use as capacitor fluid. Composition is slightly different from the Applicant´s substance monoisopropylbiphenyl. There is no information if reported results are derived from measured or nominal concentrations. Reporting of this study is somewhat limited and reliability was assessed to be 2. Results of the two studies are quite similar.

Mendoza/DOW 1981: 48 h EC50 = 0.167 mg/L
For the supporting substance, 4-ethylbiphenyl, data from a short-term daphnia test according to OECD TG 202 are available (CHRIP/NITE 1999). 48 h EC50 is 0.27 mg/L which is in good agreement with the result of Muckle/LAUS.
As the study of Muckle/LAUS 2012 was performed using as test material the substance to be registered and the reliability is assessed to be high (1), this result is used to characterise the short-term toxicity of (1-methylethyl)-1,1'-biphenyl to aquatic invertebrates.
