Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

For (1-methylethyl)-1,1'-biphenyl (isopropylbiphenyl, MIPB), PBT properties according to Annex XIII of Regulation (EU) 1907/2006 (REACH) were evaluated examining the substance itself. Assessment was carried out based on ECHA document "Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.11: PBT Assessment".

(1-Methylethyl)-1,1'-biphenyl consists of two isomers 3- (meta, m-) and 4- (para, p-)isopropylbiphenyl. Properties and behaviour in the environment of the two isomers are so similar, that these constituents of isopropybiphenyl are assessed together as the substance (1-methylethyl)-1,1'-biphenyl (mixture of isomers) itself.

For (1-methylethyl)-1,1'-biphenyl, criteria for P, and T properties proved to be not fulfilled. With respect to its bioaccumulation potential (BCF of 2896), the B- criterion was fulfilled but not the vB criterion. Overall, the substance (1-methylethyl)-1,1'-biphenyl (mixture of isomers) was identified not to be a PBT substance.
