Description of key information

In an early pre-OECD guideline study, LC50 for both adult fish and fry of flagfish have been determined. With the supporting substance 4-ethylbiphenyl, LC50 was determined for ricefish in a study according to OECD TG 203. The lower of both values is used as key value.

Additional information

For the substance (1-methylethyl)-1,1'-biphenyl (monoisopropylbiphenyl - MIPB), one study on short-term toxicity to fish was identified (Ozburn et al 1980). The procedure applied is based on an early US EPA guideline (Methods for Acute Toxicity Tests with Fish, Macroinvertebrates, and Amphibians, 1975, EPA-660/3-75-009). Test type was a flow-through system. The study includes a variety of endpoints and reporting is very limited. Reliability of data is difficult to assess. Data are used in a Weight of Evidence approach.

For the supporting substance 4-ethybiphenyl, data are available from the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation of Japan (NITE) (CHRIP/NITE 1999). Results are reported in databases of NITE without any direct details on methods or measured data, although the general test methods can be found separately in a methodological inventory. Furthermore, the methods are conform to the respective OECD test guidelines. As data of NITE have a high reputation of being robust, they are accepted as being reliable and therefore are used for assessment. They are included in the Weight of Evidence argumentation.

For the endpoint short-term toxicity to fish, results with adult fish will be considered. Results of Ozburn and CHRIP/NITE are close together. The result of CHRIP/NITE is taken as key value as it is lower than the value of Ozburn and as the result of Ozburn is not definite (> 0.75 mg/L).
