Description of key information
In an in vitro assay, (OECD 433) treatment of skin tissues with diisobutyl phthalate was not corrosive. The test was conducted according to standard guidelines and GLP and met the validity criteria. In a non-standard irritation assay using an injection technique, diisobutyl phthalate did not induce any irritation in mice exposed between one and 10 days to neat material. Diisobutyl phthalate was not irritating to rabbit eye. Information available for other phthalate diesters confirms that they are not irritating to skin or eye.

Additional information
The two available studies for diisobutyl phthalate on skin show that it is not an irritant material. Similarly no irritation was in a rabbit eye test. This lack of irritation potential is consistent with results obtained for other phthalate diesters and summarised in EU risk assessment reports e.g. ECHA 2003a,c ; 2007; 2008 .
