- Endpoint:
- flammable solids
- Type of information:
- read-across based on grouping of substances (category approach)
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- From October 2009 to March 2010
- Reliability:
- 2 (reliable with restrictions)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- guideline study
- Remarks:
- KL2 due to RA
- Justification for type of information:
- Refer to section 13 of IUCLID for details on the category justification.
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
- Deviations:
- no
- Principles of method if other than guideline:
- Not applicable
- GLP compliance:
- yes (incl. QA statement)
- Key result
- Test procedure:
- burning rate test: preliminary screening test
- Remarks on result:
- substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period
- Interpretation of results:
- non flammable
- Remarks:
- Migrated information
- Conclusions:
- Under the test conditions, the amides, C8-18 (even numbered) and C18-unsatd., N-(hydroxyethyl) is not highly flammable
- Executive summary:
A study in accordance with EU method A.10 was conducted to determine the flammability of the read across substance amides, C18-18 (even numbered) and C18-unsatd., N-(hydroxyethyl). In the preliminary test, the test substance was formed into an unbroken strip or powder train about 250 mm long by 20 mm wide by 10 mm high on a non-combustible, non-porous and low heat-conducting base plate. A hot flame from a gas burner (minimum diameter 5 mm) was applied to one end of the powder train until the powder ignited or for a maximum of 2 min. Amides, C8-18 and C18-unsatd., N-(hydroxyethyl)did not ignite from the flame of the burner instead it was found to be melting in the formed path and therefore is not highly flammable in accordance with EU Method A.10. criteria. Under the test conditions, amides, C8-18 (even numbered) and C18 unsatd., N-(hydroxyethyl)) is not highly flammable.
Reference
Amides, C8-18 (even numbered) and C18 (unsat.), N-(hydroxyethyl) did not ignite from the flame of the burner in three preliminary tests, instead it was found to be melting in the formed path. Therefore, amides, C8-18 and C18 unsat., N-(hydroxyethyl was considered not to be highly flammable and no further tests were performed.
Description of key information
The flammability was determined according to EU Method A.10 (Frączak, 2010).
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Flammability:
- non flammable
Additional information
Justification for classification or non-classification
A study in accordance with EU Method A.10 was conducted to determine the flammability of the read across substance, C8-18 and C18-unsatd. MEA. The substance did not ignite from the flame of the burner. Instead, it was found to be melting in the formed path. In conclusion, based on read-across, amides, C12-18 and C18-unsatd. MEA does not warrant classification as flammable according to CLP (EC 1272/2008) criteria.
