Biodegradation tests for the different environmental compartments should not be performed for inorganic substances. Specific justification for waiving with references to the REACH Regulation are mentioned below.

Biodegradation in water (screening tests) and in soil:

According to column 2 of REACH Annex VII, the study does not need to be conducted for inorganic substances, such as zirconium dioxide.

Biodegradation in water and sediment: simulation tests:

The study does not need to be performed as zirconium dioxide is an inorganic substance and biodegradation is therefore not relevant (refer to section 5.2.1). In addition, in accordance with Annex IX of REACH, section 9.2.1.2, the study need not be conducted if the substance is highly insoluble in water.
