Description of key information

In an algal growth inhibition study with (1-methylethyl)-1,1'-biphenyl, water accommodated fractions were applied. Results based on loadings are high. In a test with the supporting substance 4-ethylbiphenyl, test concentrations have been measured. The results of this test are further used as key values.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
0.15 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
0.027 mg/L

Additional information

Toxicity of (1-methylethyl)-1,1'-biphenyl to aquatic algae was tested in a 72 h limit test according to OECD TG 201 (Aniol/STZ 2011). A water-accommodated fraction with a nominal load of 100 mg/L was tested. Dissolved test substance concentrations could not be verified. In this test, no inhibition of growth rate was determined (EL50 >100 mg/L, NOELR 100 mg/L).

An aquatic algae toxicity test using the supporting substance 4-ethylbiphenyl could be located (CHRIP/NITE 1999). EC50 and NOEC were determined to be 0.15 mg/L and 0.027 mg/L, respectively. The data from this test are used as key values to characterise the toxicity of (1-methylethyl)-1,1'-biphenyl to aquatic algae.
