Description of key information

Abiotic degradation

Significant photodegradation of HMDTMP occurs rapidly in water, particularly in the presence of ferric (Fe(III)) ions. Furthermore some removal in dark conditions is seen, though this may be attributable to other abiotic processes rather than hydrolysis.

Biotic degradation

Screening conditions demonstrate that little degradation occurs in the short term in the absence of light. However tests have demonstrated that solutions degraded by light are susceptible to extensive biodegradation over longer duration, indicating that degradability in the wider environment is possible. In the overall context of environmental fate mechanisms, removal by irreversible binding to inorganic substrates (see Section 4.2.1) is a much more significant removal process for HMDTMP category member substances than biodegradation.
