Additional information

In an 18d-long, static test, growth of Chlorella vulgaris was inhibited by 50 % at approx. 2700 mg/L Ammonium sulphate (Tam and Wong 1996). This result is underlined by observations of Przytocka-Jisiak et al. (1977), using ammonium chloride as test substance, where an EC50(5d) of 1600 mg/L (value related to ammonium sulphate) was determined for Chlorella vulgaris. According to U.S. EPA (1985), plant species are more tolerant than invertebrates or fishes. It should be noted that ammonia might be assimilated by aquatic plants as a nitrogen source.
