Description of key information

Eucalyptus oil is a natural complex substance. It is a mixture of several components, but three of them represent 85% of that mixture. Log Kow of each of these components were determined and Koc values for Eucalyptus oil were estimated using geometric mean between three calculation approaches (MCI approach KOCWIN v2.00, Kow approach KOCWIN v2.00 and TGD 2003 part III table 4 non hydrophobics) for the two extreme Log Kow values: 2.84 for 1,8-cineol and 4.42 for alpha-pinene.

Then, Koc values of Eucalyptus oil vary between: 260.4 L/kg and 3222.3 L/kg.

Additional information

As the substance is a complexe mixture of several constituents, the environmental risk assessment was based on two “extreme” constituent, cineol 1,8 and alpha-pinene. These constituents where selected because their environmental fate is opposite. Alpha-pinene has a higher Koc and is more likely to be found in soil or sediments.
