There was available information about abiotic degradation of 1,4-diethylbenzene in water: the substance is hydrolitically stable at pH 4,7 and 9, and the estimated half-life is 9 years.

Additionnally, the phototransformation in air has been estimated with EpiSuite. In this media it is expected that 1,4-diethylbenzene will be degraded by photochemical process. Based on the CSA performed the risk of 1,4-diethylbenzen to reach the soil is very low. No further experimental results have been planned to determine the abiotic degradation in soil.

Based on available data from fate studies abiotic degradation (i. e hydrolysis study) is only expected to make a minor contribution to the overall environmental fate of the substance.
