Executive summary:

The surface tension of 2 -chloro-5-chloromethylpyridine (CCMP) was determined according to guideline 92/69/ EEC method A.5. and OECD guideline 115. According to the EEC guideline a solution of about 1000 mg/L has been prepared, due to the fact that the water solubility of 2 -chloro-5-chloromethylpyridine (CCMP) is above 1000 mg/L.

The method (OECD harmonized ring method) is based on the measurement of the maximum vertical force, which is necessary to separate a ring being in contact with the surface of the liquid filled in a measuring cup, from the surface of this liquid.

Two aqueous solutions of the test item in distilled water ( 200.8 mg and 200.6 mg ad 200 mL) were prepared by shacking the flasks, stirring 2 and 3 h at room temperature and using the ultrasonic bath for 15 minutes. Ten measurements at a temperature of 20 °C + 0.5°C, approximately every 50 sec., were carried out. A correction factor (Harkins & Jordan) has been accounted.

A calibration of the apparatus was carried out using distilled water at 20 °C ± 0.5°C.

The surface tension of 2 -chloro-S-chloromethylpyridine (CCMP) is 68.94 mN/m at 20°C.

Description of key information

The surface tension of 2 -chloro-5-chloromethylpyridine (CCMP) was determined according to guideline 92/69/ EEC method A.5. and OECD guideline 115.
