Description of key information

Two studies were performed to assess the effect of the test item on the respiration of activated sewage sludge. The effect of the test item on the respiration of activated sewage sludge gave a 3-Hour EC50/IC50 of >1000 mg/l (nominal) and > 100 mg/L (nominal). The test item was found to be non-toxic to waste-water bacteria in both studies.

Introduction.

Two studies were performed to assess the effect of the test item on the respiration of activated sewage sludge. The method followed was designed to be compatible with the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals (1984) No 209 "Activated Sludge, Respiration Inhibition Test". Both studies were realized with read across substances.

Methods. 

In the key study activated sewage sludge was exposed to an aqueous solution of the test item at concentrations of 1, 10, 100, 1000 mg/L nominal and a control concentration for a period of 3 hours. The rate of respiration was determined after 3 hours and compared to the reference substance 3,5-dichlorophenole.

 

In the supported study activated sludge was exposed to an solution of the test item at a limit concentration of 100 mg/L nominal and a control for a period of 3 hours. As reference substance 3,5-dichlorophenole was used.

 

Conclusion.

The effect of the test item on the respiration of activated sewage sludge gave a 3-Hour EC50of >1000 mg/l (nominal) in the key study and at IC50of > 100 mg/L (nominal) in the supporting study. In conclusion, the test item was found to be non-toxic to waste-water bacteria.
