Description of key information

A number of studies are available that show  C12-18 AO is readily biodegradable, both as a whole and the individual alkyl dimethylamine oxide constituents.

In the key study [Daniel M (2005)] the ready biodegradability of C12-18 AO was assessed according to ISO 14593 (CO2 headspace test) under GLP. 80 % degradation (based on inorganic carbon analysis) was observed after 28 days when the inoculum (domestic activated sludge) was treated with the substance at a measured concentration of 15.7 mg C/L. The substance reached 60 % degradation on day 3 hence meeting the 10 day window requirement for ready biodegradability. The reference substance, sodium benzoate, reached >60 % degradation in 14 days and a maximum level of 98 %. In a supporting study [van Ginkel (1990)] the ready biodegradability of the substance was assessed according to OECD TG 301 D Closed bottle test) under GLP. 82 % degradation (based on oxygen consumption) was observed after 28 days when the inoculum (domestic activated sludge) was treated with the substance at a concentration of 2 mg/L. The substance reached 11 % degradation on day 5 and 66 % on Day 15 hence meeting the 10 day window requirement for ready biodegradability. The reference substance, sodium acetate, reached 75 % degradation in 5 days and 87 % in 28 days.

Several studies where C12 -14 AO was tested to OECD TG 301 B [Clarke (2005)] [Casteel (2007)] [Hirschen (2001)], OECD TG 301 D [Balk & Hantink-De Rooij (1987)] or DIN 38 409 H 41 [Klein (1986)] are available. The substance was found to be readily biodegradable in all of these studies. Casteel (2007) also reports the results of OECD TG 301 B studies performed using the individual alkyl dimethylamine oxide constituents (from C10 -C16). Each of these constituents was found to be readily biodegradable, meeting the 10 day window.
