EC Number:
206-058-5
EC Name:
Glyoxylic acid
Cas Number:
298-12-4
Molecular formula:
C2H2O3

2-oxoacetic acid

Method

Details on exposure:
A 36-y old man was referred to the hospital for ingestion of 500 ml of a window cleaner containing 12.5% ethylene glycol and 200 ml raw ethanol.
Examinations:
glyoxylic acid was determined in whole blood by high performance liquid chromatography.

Results and discussion

Results of examinations:
Basal blood level for Glyoxylic Acid were 62.9 µmol/L, a value greatly exceeding both the levels reported in normal subjects in plasma (1 ± 1.5 µmol/L) and those found in whole blood of healthy volunteers (3.1 ± 2 µmol/L). Additionally, the incomplete dialysance of Glyoxylic Acid suggests, that Glyoxylic Acid binds to plasma proteins (Garibotto et al., 1988).
