Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a liquid

Description of key information

Glyoxylic Acid 50% is neither flammable, nor pyrophoric and does not emit flammable gases in contact with water.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

In accordance with the ECHA Guidance document Chapter R.7a, Glyoxylic Acid 50% does not need to be tested for flammability because this endpoint can be reliably assessed on the basis of the chemical structure, flash point and experience in handling and use:

For liquids the primary value for ease of ignition is the flash point. No flash point could be determined up to 114°C when glyoxylic acid started to boil. This demonstrates that Glyoxylic Acid 50% is not flammable.

Glyoxylic Acid 50% does not fall into a substance category displaying pyrophoric properties. In addition, experience in handling and use show the absence of pyrophoricity.

Glyoxylic Acid exists as a 50 % aqueous solution. Thus, experience in handling and use demonstrates the absence of flammability in contact with water.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The available data demonstrate that Glyoxylic Acid 50% is not subject to classification according to Directive 67/548/EEC and Regulation 1272/2008/EC.
