A complex combination of hydrocarbons obtained by the distillation of debenzenized light steam-cracked naphtha. It consists predominantly of cyclic olefinic and aromatic hydrocarbons having carbon numbers predominantly in the range of C8 through C16 and boiling in the range of approximately 130°C to 300°C (226°F to 572°F).
on the acute aquatic toxicity of a number of streams are available for
this category. The data from these streams have been read across to the
other category members.
studies were conducted to standard guidelines and according to GLP and
so are considered fully reliable for use as key studies. The authors
report the results based both on nominal loading rates (WAF) and mean
measured concentrations. As the test substance is a hydrocarbon stream
with various components reporting a measured concentration could be
misleading as the measured concentration does not relate to a
concentration of the raw stream. Instead, we have used the results
reported as WAF, which better represent the potential toxicity of the
term toxicity to fish data gave a 96 hour LL50 range of 0.73 - 6.3 mg/L
term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates data gave a 48 hour EL50 range of
0.91-3.2 mg/L (WAF). Toxicity to aquatic algae data gave a 72 hour ErL50
range of 1.3 -1.5 mg/L (WAF). The streams in the category are not
readily biodegradable and have a log Kow range of 2.8 to >6.5. This
would lead to a classification of Aquatic Acute Category 1 and Aquatic
Chronic Category 1 under the CLP.
The aquatic hazard assessment is currently
on-going for Category L as part of the wider Environmental Testing
Programme which includes screening and aquatic toxicity tests.
