Toluene 2,4- diisocyanate or Toluene 2,6- diisocyanate: LC50(18h) > 100 mg/kg b.w. (Sturnus vulgaris, oral gavage)

The acute oral toxicity in Sturnus vulgaris (European starling) of the test substances Toluene 2.4- diisocyanate or Toluene 2.6- diisocyanate were determined by standardized testing procedures (Schafer, 1983). Wild-trapped birds were preconditioned to captivity for 2 to 6 weeks and were usually dosed by gavage with solutions or suspensions of the test chemical in propylene glycol. LD50 values were calculated by the method of Thompson (1948), Thompson and Weil (1952), and Weil (1952). It was shown that redwings were significantly more sensitive than starlings, and that starlings and coturnix were not different. After an application of 18 hours of the test substances LD50 values greater than 100 mg/kg b.w. were determined in Sturnus vulgaris for both Toluene 2.4- diisocyanate and Toluene 2.6- diisocyanate.
