- Endpoint:
- flammable liquids: obsolete as covered by section 'Flash point'
- Data waiving:
- study technically not feasible
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a liquid
- Endpoint:
- pyrophoric liquids
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied

Description of key information
The substance, trimethoxy(vinyl)silane:
• Is flammable (based on a measured flash point of 25.5-26°C and boiling point 123°C)
• In contact with water does not emit a flammable gas based on structure
• Is not pyrophoric based on structure
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Flammability:
- flammable
Additional information
The flammability study is not required for liquids as flammability is assessed on the basis of flash point. The substance has a measured flash point of 25.5 - 26°C at 1013 hPa.
There is no indication on the basis of structure and experience in handling and use that the substance is pyrophoric (flammable in contact with air) or flammable in contact with water.
Therefore, in accordance with Section 1 of REACH Annex XI, there is no need to conduct further flammability testing.
A lower explosive limit (LEL) of 1.4vol% and an upper explosive limit (UEL) of 23.94vol% were determined for the substance in accordance with ASTM E918-83. In available secondary sources, LEL of 1.4vol% at 54°C and UEL of 19.9vol% at 82°C and LEL value of 1.1vol% were reported for the submission substance.
Justification for classification or non-classification
- The flash point values =23°C combined with a boiling point of 123°C indicate a classification of Flam. Liq. 3, H226: Flammable liquid and vapour, according to Regulation 1272/2008.
- A flash point value <23°C combined with a boiling point of 123°C indicates a classification of Flam. Liq. 2, H225: Highly flammable liquid and vapour, according to Regulation 1272/2008.
The substance has reliable measured flash points in the range 23-26°C (key study 25.5-26°C) and a boiling point of 123°C. These results indicate that the substance should be classified as Flammable Liquid Category 3 according to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008. Sources to which reliability could not be assigned indicate flash points in the range 22-28°C; some of these results would indicate a different classification.
According to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP Regulations)
Flash point is sensitive to the presence of volatile impurities in the substance. Individual manufacturers will classify their product according to the flash point measured for that product.
Flammability in contact with air:
There is no evidence to suggest that the submission substance should be classified for this hazard on the basis of Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.
Flammability in contact with water:
There is no evidence to suggest that the submission substance should be classified for flammability in contact with water on the basis of Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.
