EC number: 265-058-3
CAS number: 64741-57-7
A complex combination of hydrocarbons produced by the vacuum distillation of the residuum from atmospheric distillation of crude oil. It consists of hydrocarbons having carbon numbers predominantly in the range of C20 through C50 and boiling in the range of approximately 350°C to 600°C (662°F to 1112°F). This stream is likely to contain 5 wt. % or more of 4- to 6-membered condensed ring aromatic hydrocarbons.
Key study data are available for each relevant physicochemical endpoint for the heavy fuel oils category. All substances in the category are viscous liquids with a characteristic odour (CONCAWE, 1998) at ambient temperature (20°C) and pressure (101.3 kPa). There is no guideline method available for this endpoint and data presented are based on visual observation, supported by data on melting point/pour point. The pour point for chemicals in this category is generally <30°C (CONCAWE, 1998) and the boiling point ranges from 160°C to >750°C (CONCAWE, 2010a). The density ranges from 840 to 1100 Kg/cm3at 15°C and the vapour pressure ranges from 0.02 to 0.79 kPa at 120°C (MW 330 to 500) and 0.06 to 0.86 at 150°C (MW 350 to 420) (CONCAWE, 2010a).
Flash points for heavy fuel oils are generally 64 to 310°C (CONCAWE, 2010a) and the self-ignition temperature ranges from 220°C to 550°C (CONCAWE, 2010a). Heavy fuel oils do not meet EU CLP Regulation (EC. No. 1272/2008) classification criteria for flammability, explosivity or oxidising properties, and do not dissociate or form ionized species. The viscosity of substances in this category is typically >3 mm2/s at 100°C (CONCAWE, 2010a).
