A complex combination of hydrocarbons obtained from the vacuum distillation of the products from a thermal cracking process. It consists predominantly of hydrocarbons having carbon numbers predominantly greater than C34 and boiling above approximately 495°C (923°F).
Due to the complex nature of bitumens, single numerical values for boiling point are not meaningful. Bitumens are residual products from vacuum distillation. In general they have boiling points (EN15199-2/IP507) over 320°C (hard bitumen usually > 500°C), reflecting the distillation temperature (CONCAWE, 1992a).
