Description of key information

Two studies are available on the toxicity of Nitroethane to fish. The key study (Freitag, 1988) was carried out according to OECD 203 with analytical verification of the test concentrations. A second supporting study was carried out according to the principle of the guideline; however, it provided limited information on the test conditions and verification of the concentrations tested.

Additional information

The key study was conducted according to guideline and/or standard method but was non-GLP. Results for 48 hour exposure are reported according to the guideline's requirement at the time even though the study duration was 96 hours. The study was carried out in a closed system to reduce the volatility of the test material. The analogue 1-Nitropropane was tested in the same conditions and in a repeat study under flow-through conditions leading to the same conclusion on hazard. Based on the low acute hazard to fish, the low gain on information obtained in the repeat study for the analogue, the study was not repeated according to the latest version of the OECD protocol to reduce animal testing. The 48 hour LC50 to Brachydanio rerio was 880 mg/L. The 96 hour LC50 for nitroethane in Pimephales promelas was 596 mg/L; however, no details on the concentration of the test material were provided, hence this study is disregarded.
