Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
surface tension
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because based on structure, surface activity is not expected or cannot be predicted
the study does not need to be conducted because surface activity is not a desired property of the material
Justification for type of information:
JUSTIFICATION FOR DATA WAIVING
In accordance with column 2 of REACh Annex VII, the study needs only to be conducted if based on structure, surface activity is expected or can be predicted.
The present multi-constituent substance is not intended to be used as a surfactant (i.e. not a desired property), and the three major constituents, representing ca 95% of a typical composition, do not contain groups (such as distinct polar and non-polar parts) indicating that it will have surface-active properties in solution. Therefore, the study is deemed unnecessary.
Endpoint:
surface tension
Adequacy of study:
supporting study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
data from handbook or collection of data
Surface tension:
32.3 mN/m
Temp.:
25 °C

The raw data is given as: 3.23X10-2 N/m @ 25.33 K

The temperature is probably a typo (°C).

Also, the value is supposed to relate to the pure liquid, and not a 90% saturated solution, as required by the standard guideline.

Endpoint:
surface tension
Adequacy of study:
supporting study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
data from handbook or collection of data
Surface tension:
32.2 mN/m
Temp.:
20 °C

The raw data is given as: 32.2 dynes/cm = 0.0322 N/m at 20 deg C

The value is supposed to relate to the pure liquid, and not a 90% saturated solution, as required by the standard guideline.

Endpoint:
surface tension
Adequacy of study:
supporting study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
data from handbook or collection of data
Surface tension:
27.1 mN/m
Temp.:
20 °C

The raw data is given as: 27.1 dynes/cm = 0.0271 N/m at 20 deg C

The value is supposed to relate to the pure liquid, and not a 90% saturated solution, as required by the standard guideline.

Description of key information

Not required on the multi-constituent substance, not its intended use.

From constituents, the pure liquid registered substance is expected to have a surface-tension of ca 30 mN/m, but the value is not relevant for consideration as a surfactant.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The study on the registered multi-constituent substance was waived, based on non-intended use, and lack of structural alert in the chemical structure of the major constituents.

As supporting information, literature data was provided on the constituents, falling in the range 27.1 to 32.3 mN/m. However these values should be regarded with caution, as they are supposed to relate to the pure liquids (and not 90% aqueous solutions).
