The ready biodegradation of “2-propanol and 2-butanol production, distn. residues” (consisting mainly of di-isobutyl ether, di-isopropyl ether, C3- and C4-alcohols and C6-hydrocarbons) was tested according to ISO 14593:2005 under GLP. No significant degradation (14%) of the test item was observed after 28 days. Thus, the “2-propanol and 2-butanol production, distn. residues” are not readily biodegradable.

This finding is corroborated by the degradability of the main constituents of 2-propanol and 2-butanol production, distn. residues: While alcoholic components (SBA, and IPA), making up approximately 15% of the reaction mass, were found to be readily biodegradable, the components DSBE, DIPE, were not readily biodegradable, whereas TBA may be inherently biodegradable.
