Reading across from sodium D-gluconate, the substance is predicted to possess a 96-hour LC50 in freshwater fish of >100 mg/L, and the substance has been shown to possess a 48-hour EC50 in daphnia magna of >1000 mg/L. No inhibition of cell growth rate or changes in growth rate were reported in algae exposed to 100 mg sodium D-gluconate/L; however, at 1000 mg/L, 70% inhibition of cell growth, and 43% of growth rate were reported. D-glucono-1,5-lactone was reported to have a 3-hour EC50 of 649.8 mg/L in activated sludge.
