Preliminary screening test: The pile failed to ignite during the two minutes that the Bunsen flame was applied. The result of the preliminary screening test obviated the need to perform the main test.

For the moisture content determination, the test material increased in mass after drying at 105 °C. this increase in mass is probably due to the absorption of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during the apporximately 20 hour period in the oven. This increase in mass suggests the moisture content of the test item was not significant.

Executive summary:

The procedure for the preliminary screening test specified in Method A10 Flammability (Solids) of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008, is the same as the procedure for the preliminary screening test specified in Test N.1 (test method for readily combustible solids) of the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods manual of tests and criteria, fourth revised edition 2003. Test N.1 states that, if the substance does not ignite within the 2 minutes test period, then the substance should not be classified as a flammable solid and thus is not a readily combustible solid of Division 4.1.

Calcium oxide is not flammable based on the results of a preliminary screening test performed according to EU Method A.10 where it failed to ignite within the 2 -minute test period. A similar result was obtained for calcium carbonate in a preliminary screening test performed according to Method N.1 of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria, 4th revised edition, 2003. Therefore it may be concluded that grades of calcium oxide containing up to 35% calcium carbonate will also be not flammable.
