Description of key information

The substance sodium percarbonate is an oxidising solid of class 5.1 according to the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, with packaging group III. It has fire enhancing properties and should be kept away from combustibles.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Oxidising properties:
yes

Additional information

Different grades of sodium percarbonate are on the market. This is reflected in the deviating results of the three available, reliable tests on the oxidising properties of the substance. However, the commonly marketed grade of sodium percarbonate should be considered as oxidising as two of the studies found that sodium percarbonate is an oxidising solid of class 5.1 with packaging group III.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The proposed classification of sodium percarbonate as an oxidizing solid of category 2 according to the CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 is for the uncoated substance. The marketed product is normally coated and most tests on oxidizing properties were performed with coated material resulting in the classification as oxidizing solid of category 3 according to the CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
