Endpoint:
particle size distribution (granulometry)
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
28 October 2011
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: according to ISO 13320:2009 “Particle size analysis – Laser diffraction methods
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: ISO 13320:2009 "Particle size analysis - Laser difraction methods"
Deviations:
no
Principles of method if other than guideline:
A sample of tantalum was dispersed in water, and passed through a laser. The light scattered by the particles at various angles was measured by multi-element detectors, and numerical values relating to the scattering pattern were recorded for subsequent analysis. The Fraunhofer approximation was used for calculation of the particle size distribution.

Remarks on result:
other: According to ISO 13320 the relative standard deviation for d50 is smaller than 3 %, for d10 and d90 smaller than 5 %. For powders below 10 µm these maximum values should be doubled.

For a detailed report on the results, please see the attached.

Mean diameters (distribution type: volume) were determined by applying the Fraunhofer approximation.

Conclusions:
Under the conditions of the study, the mean diameters (distribution type: volume) applying the Fraunhofer approximation were determined to be: D10 = 5.58 µm, D50 = 27.93 µm and D90 = 41.11 µm.
Executive summary:

The particle size of the test substance was determined according to ISO 13320:2009 "Particle size analysis - Laser diffraction methods". Under the conditions of the study, the mean diameters (distribution type: volume) applying the Fraunhofer approximation were determined to be: D10 = 5.58 µm, D50 = 27.93 µm and D90 = 41.11 µm.

Description of key information

D10 = 5.58 µm, D50 = 27.93 µm and D90 = 41.11 µm, ISO 13320:2009, Sunderkötter 2012.

Additional information

The particle size of the test substance was determined according to ISO 13320:2009 "Particle size analysis - Laser diffraction methods". Under the conditions of the study, the mean diameters (distribution type: volume) applying the Fraunhofer approximation were determined to be: D10 = 5.58 µm, D50 = 27.93 µm and D90 = 41.11 µm. The study was assigned a reliability score of 2 in accordance with the principles for assessing data quality as described in Klimisch (1997).
