Description of key information

The substance hydrolyses to (3-{[3-(trihydroxysilyl)propyl]disulfanyl}propyl)silanetriol and ethanol with a hydrolysis half-life of greater than 40 hours. Given the rate of hydrolysis, the environmental hazard assessment for the aquatic compartment including wastewater treatment plant, is based on the properties of the parent substance in accordance with REACH guidance for Chemical Safety Assessment (Chapter R16, ECHA 2016). The environmental hazard assessment for the sediment and soil compartments are considered for both parent substance and silanol hydrolysis product.

(3-{[3-(Trihydroxysilyl) propyl]disulfanyl}propyl)silanetriol is the expected final product of hydrolysis reactions under conditions of a hydrolysis laboratory study. However, other biotic or abiotic reactions may proceed over longer timescales in the environment.

The substance has a named impurity that is similar in structure and therefore the impurity will have similar physicochemical properties and assessment approaches.
