Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Toxicity to microorganisms: ASRI 3 hr EC50 >100mg/l (loading rate) (OECD 209) for the structurally-related substance trimethoxy(methyl)silane.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

No reliable data are available for the submission substance, triacetoxyethylsilane.

A reliable study conducted according to an appropriate test protocol, and in compliance with GLP, is available for trimethoxy(methyl)silane (CAS 1185 -55 -3), which is a structural analogue of triacetoxyethylsilane.

An activated sludge respiration inhibition 3hr EC50 value of >100 mg/l (loading rate) was determined. This indicates that the test substance was not toxic to waste water (activated sludge) bacteria at a loading rate of 100 mg/l.

This is selected as the key study.

It is considered appropriate to read across the toxicity to microorganisms result for trimethoxy(methyl)silane because both trimethoxy(methyl)silane and triacetoxyethylsilane hydrolyse rapidly to methylsilanetriol and ethylsilanetriol, respectively, which are structural analogues. The other hydrolysis products are methanol and acetic acid. Effects of acetic acid on microorganisms are limited to those that result from changes to pH in unbuffered media.

This read-across, indicating no evidence of toxicity to microorganisms, is supported by an overall review of the toxicity to microorganisms of the organosilane substances category as a whole.
