Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Justification for type of information:
Under environmental conditions the substance will almost be completely polymerized into polyureas, since HDI trimer forms oligo- and polymers in contact with water. Significant concentrations of unreacted 'Hexamethylene diisocyanate, oligomerisation product (biuret type)' would not be expected to occur in sediment.
The water-insoluble polyureas considered to be essentially not bioavailable. Due to the large molecular size of polyureas, cellular uptake is unlikely. For this reason toxic effects on organisms are unlikely. Studies on the aquatic environment, in which no effects occurred to organisms of all three trophic levels, support this conclusion. Furthermore, a risk assessment covering all uses of the substance demonstrates the safe use of the material - including the sediment compartment.
