Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Hydrolysis product: Octanoic acid: With high probability acutely not harmful to aquatic algae.
Hydrolysis product: HCl: Acutely very toxic to aquatic algae.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

No data on the toxicity of octanoyl chloride is available. However, since the test substance rapidly hydrolyses in water, algae are mainly exposed to the hydrolysis product octanoic acid.

The toxicity of octanoic acid to algae is assessed via a study with a marine diatom (Nitzschia closterium). The 72 -h EC50 of 144 mg/L indicates that octanoic acid is not harmful to aquatic algae (Mann & Florence, 1987).

The hydrolysis product hydrochloric acid (HCl) was tested in an algae growth inhibition test according to OECD 201 with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. The 72-h ErC50 was 0.492 mg/L (acid equivalent to pH 5.3), the 72 -h NOEC was 0.097 (acid equivalent to pH 6; OECD 2002).
