Description of key information

Octanoyl chloride causes severe skin irritation. Due to the very severe skin irritation, severe damage to the eye is expected.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

In an irritation study according to OECD 404 three rabbits each were treated with octanoylchloride for 3 min, 15 min and 4h under semiocclusive conditions. Severe irritation but no full thickness necrosis of the skin was observed. Scores for the 4 h treatment were 4.0/4 (erythema) and 3.8/4 (edema).

Due to the very severe skin irritation, severe damage to the eye is expected.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the available data a classification concerning skin irritation (R38; Skin corr/irr Cat2) and severe eye damage (R41; eye irr Cat 1) is warranted. As the substance is toxic by inhalation no respiratory irritation classification is warranted (STOT single3; R37).
