Ready biodegradability tests for several alkyl sulfates are available. Based on the results of screening tests for biodegradation in water it can be concluded that alkyl sulfates with carbon chain length of C8-C18 are readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria (OECD SIDS 2007).

Several studies proving ready biodegradation of C16-18AS Na (CAS 68955-20-4) are available according to OECD 301 D guideline (Richterich 2001), and according to OECD screening test, conf. to Directive 73/405/EEC - MBAS removal, EU Method C.4-E, OECD Guideline 301 E and OECD confirmatory test- coupled units test (Steber 1988). Moreover, one simulation test according to OECD 303A is available showing that C16-18AS Na (CAS 68955-20-4) is inherently biodegradable.
