Description of key information

The toxicity to STP microorganisms by monoisopropylnaphthalene can be evaluated using results of a ready biodegradation test. In a toxicity control, there was no inhibition of biodegradation of a positive reference substance at a MIPN concentration of 22.2 mg/L demonstrating no toxicity to the STP inoculum at this concentration.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
22.2 mg/L

Additional information

No studies could be located that directly examine the effect of isopropylnaphthalene (MIPN) on STP microorganism. But information on the toxicity of MIPN to STP microorganisms is available from a ready biodegradation test. Toxicity of MIPN to the inoculum of this test (activated sludge of a predominantly municipal sewage treatment plant) was examined setting up toxicity controls containing the test medium, inoculum, test substance (MIPN) and a positive reference substance (sodium benzoate). In this test, no inhibition of biodegradation of the reference substance was observed at a test substance concentration of 22.2 mg/L, thus representing a NOEC for the toxicity of MIPN to STP microorganisms.
